2006-2007 CP Basketball Preview - Nov. 3, 2006
by Connor Moore (Rebel Times)

As the cold Friday nights at the football field end, they now transition to the hardwood as the 2006 basketball season starts. “Our season right now looks very promising,” said Patrick Freeman (12). Freeman is the only returning starter off last year’s team. Freeman averaged 9.7 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists per game. With only one returning starter the Rebels have a lot of hard work in front of them. The team had a mediocre year last year with 14 wins and 13 losses, but have high hopes of improving this year.

“A lot of our young guys are really athletic, so we shouldn’t have problems,” said Freeman. The youth on this year’s team may bring promise for other years to come.

When asked about how the team would build chemistry Calvin Nolte (11) stated, “A lot of us played on JV last year, and we all play open gym to gain confidence in each other.”  Team defense was one of the biggest problems last year for Rebels.

“Team defense is always a challenge, and we didn’t have a true point guard,” said last year’s head coach Ryan Laagar.  This year there is also a new addition to the Rebels, Coach Mark Tuchscherer, who brings great enthusiasm to the team this year.  “He was the assistant coach last year, so he knows the players pretty well,” stated Laagar.

“We all know him (Mark Tuchscherer) well from last season, and he’s a good guy,” said Freeman about his new coach.

Most members of last year’s team including:  Marc McCarthy (12), Zerrick Fuller (10), Ty Jesinoski (11), and Nate Dudgeon (11), competed in tournaments during the summer.  The summer team had great success in the four tournaments they competed in.

The toughest teams in the conference include Osseo and Andover, which will be big games for the boys’ this year.  The Andover Huskies come into town on January 5, 2007.  The Rebels go up against Osseo on January 23. 2007 at Osseo which could be a conference championship decider.

The consensus of the team this year is to win the conference and hopefully move on to state.

“We have a balanced team this year, and we have a chance to be great,” said Tuchscherer, “It’s going to take dedication and determination.”
